* Good-bye A.R.T.S., Hello The Arts Building
--------------------------------------------
A.R.T.S. splashed into the Auburn arts scene during the summer of 1996, filling the vacant space at 808 Lincoln Way formerly housing the Foothill Furniture store. Spearheaded by Larry Ortiz and Anthony Gill, the facility had an immediate impact on the region, providing a much needed focal point for the growing art community.
The combination of art gallery, event center, classroom space and office space for creative professionals made for an eclectic environment of continuing evolution as tenants, managers and walls came and went.
After a few of years, Larry and Anthony the management baton was passed to Katy Fries, later joined by her husband, yours truly, Brian Fries. During our tenure at the helm, we worked hard to keep the facility at the forefront of the local art scene while also maintaining our independent businesses.
Over these past six years, all those associated with A.R.T.S. learned a great deal, and the regional art community grew enormously in its scale, quality and visibility within the region, while gaining a reputation throughout Northern California as an exciting center of creative activity.
The community is ready for a more professional venue for its artists and Arts community. Our response? The A.R.T.S. name has been retired, the building has been gutted, and a new venue, The Arts Building, has emerged.
The Arts Building is now managed by Keith Sutter, the last remaining original full-time tenant of A.R.T.S. The gallery is now managed by Sandy Wythawai, who has been assisting with the gallery here since early 2002. The building owner, Jerry Burns, has graciously funded extensive building upgrades.
I remain in the building as a simple tenant with my BrainScan Software business. Katy is pursuing art, education and a less-stressful life from home. The baton has been passed, and we wish great success to the new overseers.
Come in and see the upgraded space! With the changes, the building is fully occupied, with the upstairs practically complete and the basement nearing completion. The new tenant roster at The Arts Building reads as follows:
* Arts Council of Placer County - Business office, expanded from old offices next door -
* Auburn Symphony - Business office and ticket sales -
* Big Print Online - Keith Sutter's online large-format printing service -
* BrainScan Software - Brian Fries' software, multimedia and Internet development business -
* Classroom studio spaces, redefined and enhanced
* Reif Erickson - Artist studio -
* Linda Green - Artist studio
* Stan Padilla - Artist studio
* J. Randall Smith - Artist studio and showroom
* Merridee Smith and Beth Brooks - Artist studio -
* Keith Sutter Photography - Commercial photography services -
* Sandy Wythawai - Artist studio, Art and gift sales
* Auburn Symphony Opens New Season
----------------------------------
The Auburn Symphony opens it's 16th season this weekend with a "Romantic Adventure" concert on Friday, October 11, 8:15 p.m. and Sunday, October 13, 3:00 p.m. Call (530) 823-6683 for tickets - they're going fast.
* Autumn Art Studios Tour
-------------------------
The 2003 Autumn Art Studios Tour through the foothills of Western Placer County is coming up the weekend of November 9-10. This is a great weekend to drive through the fall leaves and see artists in their studios. Talk to the artists, learn what, how and why they make things, and buy original works directly from their creators.
There will be a preview exhibition of works by most of the 70+ artists on this year's tour at the new "405 Gallery" in Roseville, at 405 Vernon Street next to the old Tower Theater. The artist reception for this show will be on Saturday, October 19, from 6:30-9:00pm. The show will remain on display through the weekend of the studio tour.
For more information on the tour, see
or contact the Arts Council of Placer County at 530-885-5670.
* The New ArtsOfAuburn.com
--------------------------
As a part of the transition from "A.R.T.S." to "The Arts Building", and my move away from management of said building, I am also embarking on a transition of my Web site at , which heretofore has focused on activities within the A.R.T.S. facility.
My intention is to turn ArtsOfAuburn.com into a resource for the Arts throughout Auburn and the surrounding communities, from Roseville to Colfax, Cool to Lake of the Pines. Significant events from throughout Northern California and Nevada will receive coverage as well.
I intend to provide news, commentary and an extensive calendar listing of all Arts activities in the region, and will be looking for calendar items, sponsors, community feedback, news stories and reviews related to the visual and performing arts in the region.
This will serve as a building block for my Neon Trail online Arts community project, which is providing Internet-based services to artists and arts organizations.
This is the work that truly excites me (along with my ceramic sculpture and pottery), and the ability to focus on this project is a prime motivator of my move away from the responsibilities of running the A.R.T.S. facility.
If you have any upcoming arts events, shows, sales, performances, classes, etc. - big or small - email me at "events@artsofauburn.com" and I'll include the listing in the online calendar as soon as it's ready for prime time.
Take care!
Brian Fries
