"Mrs. Haman's Birds" 6th graders' Art Show in Roseville

Visitors to The Art House Children's Gallery in Roseville's historic Haman House will be greeted by a virtual aviary when they enter the old Victorian through December 19. Reminiscent of the tropical bird collection of the home's former hostess, a children's art exhibit entitled "Mrs. Haman's Birds" features brightly-colored birds painted by sixth graders at Antelope Crossing Middle School in Antelope, California.

The Artwork is the creative result of the school year's first art project for the sixth graders. Teachers Charlene Parker and Heather Otis applied a visual arts program called Arts Attack to challenge the young artists to incorporate principles of color and composition into a finished work of art.

The tropical bird theme offers the perfect path for lessons in color and composition, and as an exhibit, suits the Haman House well. Alice Haman, the second wife of the home's original owner, was rumored to have not just ordinary, run-of-the-mill birds and animals as pets. Local folks may still remember passing by and marveling at her menagerie of tropical birds, which she apparently "played to the galleries" on the large wraparound porch of her Victorian home.

"Mrs. Haman's Birds" will be on display in The Art House Gallery in the Haman House, 424 Oak Street in Roseville, through December 19. An opening reception will be held Thursday, November 13, 6:30-8pm. Gallery hours are Tuesdays – Saturdays, 11am-3pm.
